Day 22: Valparaiso, Chile

Today's plan was to investigate the Chilean city of Valparaiso, which was an hour and a half bus ride outside Santiago. Here Archana and I get settled in for the journey.

The city of Valparaiso is a bit rough around the edges but there were some attractive old buildings, such as this army headquarters in the main square.

Here is one of the more attractive park areas we passed through as we wandered around.

One of the most notable aspects of the city is that it is surrounded by hills that are filled with multi-colored houses. Unfortunately it was a very foggy, gray day so things look a bit hazy, but it was a nice view to look up at the hills.

In order to get up the hill, they have special funiculars called "ascensores" (elevators). This is the view from inside the elevator as we went up.

The area up on the hill was faded but charming and had a number of small cafes and restaurants. We had lunch in a French place with fabulous food and then just walked around the streets. Here is a random vegetable market in the middle of the street.

After a long day of walking, here is the crew resting in a cafe having a beer (local brand - Escudo). We were also escaping a random wild dog that had decided to follow us for many blocks.

We were happy with our ability to navigate the taxis, subways and buses required to accomplish our Valparaiso journey, even if it wasn't as beautiful a destination as we had hoped. We decided it might have been more impressive on a clear day when you can see the ocean better.

We had dinner at very good Italian restaurant near our hotel, had a drink in our hotel bar and are headed to bed for a good night's sleep after quite a few days of having to get up rather early.

Tomorrow's plan is to walk around Santiago center - we are hoping things are open as it is a holiday. Thank you to everyone who is taking the time to write comments! It is one of our favorite things to check and see if there any new ones. And yes, Rudy, the Andes would be a perfect place for you to exhaust yourself running up and down.
