Day 110: Tarragona, Spain

Since today is Monday, all of the museums (which includes the areas with Roman ruins) are closed. So we decided to conquer the cathedral this morning and get a glimpse of the cloisters, which my friend David had recommended. The cathedral is apparently noteworthy architecturally because it has both Gothic and Romanesque elements.

In this photo of the main entrance, you can see the Gothic style doorway, which has Romanesque doors on either side (we're learning more about architecture than we ever thought possible!).

Here is an illicit photo that Frank took of the inside of the cathedral, down the nave toward one of the rose windows.

Here are two photos of the courtyard in the cloisters area, which was my favorite part. There were multiple fish ponds, fountains and gorgeous roses.

After leaving the cathedral, on our walk through the old section of town, we came across this building which has a facade that is completely painted on:

The rest of our afternoon was spent being lazy at the beach. My friend David took us to his favorite local beach (La Savinosa) which was a 5 minute drive from town. It has to be one of the nicest beaches I've been to on the Mediterranean in terms of sand and water - the sand is extremely fine and soft and the water was crystal clear, warm and had the perfect size waves.

It was difficult to get me out of the water and off the beach when the time came, particularly because this was my last day to enjoy the Mediterranean before we head inland tomorrow.

David dropped us off in the plaza by our hotel, where we had to say goodbye to him because he had to go back and do some work (whatever that is...). :-)

Frank and I spent the rest of the evening strolling around town before finishing with dinner in the central Plaza near our hotel.

Here is another photo from our wanderings taken from the Balcony of the Mediterranean looking down towards one of the beaches:

Here is a view of our plaza - Placa de la Font:

And this is a night view of the town hall ("Ajuntament" in Catalan) which is on one end of the Plaza.

Another fabulous day and very relaxing! We were so lucky to have a Tarragona native as our guide the past two days and it was great to be able to see a friend along the way. Thank you to David for making our stay in Tarragona so much more fun and interesting!
